About Me

I'm an undergraduate at Franklin & Marshall College pursuing a double major in Economics & Mathematics, carrying a 3.92 GPA with Dean's Honor List standing. I pair a proof-based mathematics track — linear algebra, real analysis, and abstract algebra — with applied econometric research, deliberately building the toolkit for doctoral study.

My research runs across three fronts: monetary economics (a peer-reviewed SVAR study at the Central Bank of Nepal), development and labor economics (faculty-coauthored work on debt bondage in South Asia), and institutional political economy (an R Shiny dashboard behind a paper bound for the Cambridge Journal of Economics). What ties them together is a commitment to letting data — not priors — settle the question.

I've worked on the ground with a central bank, a U.S. state workforce board, and international research teams, and I speak five languages. As President of the Economics Club, I lead campus programming on finance and environmental economics.

Monetary Policy Pass Through Considering the Reserve Ratio and Policy Rate in Nepal: An Empirical Gaze Using SVAR Analysis

Authors: Pokhrel, A., & Upreti, S.

Economic Review of Nepal, 8(1), 34–52 (2025)

Using a structural VAR estimated on 13 years of macroeconomic data, this paper traces how Nepal's policy rate and cash-reserve ratio transmit through the banking system to inflation and credit growth. Policy-rate changes pass through with a measurable lag, while reserve-ratio changes act faster but more bluntly — evidence of a weaker transmission mechanism than in developed financial systems.

SSRN Working Paper

The Impact of Global Oil Price Shocks on Nepal's Foreign Exchange Reserves and Inflation

Author: Upreti, S.

SSRN Working Paper Series (2025)

A time-series study of how global oil-price fluctuations propagate through Nepal's import-dependent economy. Using a VAR model with impulse-response analysis, it shows that oil-price spikes strain foreign-exchange reserves within a few months and feed inflation with a short lag — highlighting the exposure of a small, commodity-importing economy to external shocks.

When AI Teaches Economics: How Dataset Constraints and Prompts Shape Pedagogical Quality

Authors: Upreti, S., & Goncalves, L.

SSRN Working Paper Series (2026)

An experimental study of generative AI as a tutor for undergraduate microeconomics, comparing a constrained condition (responses limited to a single textbook) against an unconstrained one (full training corpus plus open web). It asks a practical question for educators: does grounding AI tutors in curated course material produce better teaching than unrestricted access to information?
