Organization Background
Smart WASH Solutions is a research and consulting organization working in partnership with UNICEF Nepal to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure and access across the country. The organization conducts market research, regulatory analysis, and feasibility studies to inform WASH policy and investment decisions.
Project Focus: Comprehensive market analysis of Nepal's $160 million bottled water industry to identify regulatory gaps, market inefficiencies, and opportunities for improved water access and quality standards.
Role Overview
As a Research Analyst, I designed and executed a comprehensive field research project examining Nepal's bottled water market from both supply and demand perspectives. The research combined quantitative data collection with qualitative interviews to provide actionable insights for policy recommendations and market strategy development.
Core Responsibilities
1. Research Design & Planning
Developed comprehensive research methodology for multi-stakeholder market analysis:
- Designed sampling strategy covering urban, peri-urban, and rural markets
- Created structured questionnaires for factory owners and retailers
- Developed interview protocols ensuring consistent data collection
- Planned logistics for field visits across Kathmandu Valley and surrounding districts
- Established data validation procedures and quality control measures
2. Field Data Collection
Led primary data collection through site visits and stakeholder interviews:
Factory-Level Research (10+ Facilities)
- Conducted on-site visits to bottled water production facilities
- Interviewed factory owners and operations managers
- Collected data on production capacity, technology, and quality control
- Documented regulatory compliance levels and certification status
- Assessed infrastructure, distribution networks, and market reach
Retail-Level Research (50+ Retailers)
- Surveyed diverse retail outlets (supermarkets, convenience stores, street vendors)
- Gathered pricing data, sales volumes, and consumer preference information
- Documented product variety, brand dominance, and distribution patterns
- Collected retailer perspectives on demand trends and supply constraints
- Investigated informal market dynamics and unregistered products

3. Data Management & Analysis
Data Pipeline Development in R
# Data cleaning and structuring pipeline
library(dplyr)
library(tidyr)
library(stringr)
# Import and clean survey data
factory_data <- read.csv("factory_surveys.csv") %>%
mutate(
production_capacity = as.numeric(
str_remove_all(production_capacity, "[^0-9.]")
),
district = str_to_title(str_trim(district)),
certified = ifelse(certification_status == "Yes", 1, 0)
) %>%
filter(!is.na(factory_id))
# Merge supply and demand datasets
market_analysis <- factory_data %>%
left_join(retailer_data, by = "brand_name") %>%
mutate(
market_share = sales_volume / sum(sales_volume),
price_per_liter = price / bottle_size
)
Analysis Conducted
- Market Structure Analysis: Examined market concentration, competitive dynamics, and barriers to entry
- Regulatory Gap Analysis: Identified inconsistencies between regulations and actual compliance
- Supply Chain Mapping: Traced product flow from production to end consumers
- Pricing Analysis: Analyzed price variations across brands, regions, and distribution channels
- Quality Assessment: Compared stated vs. actual quality standards and testing procedures
4. Visualization & Reporting
Transformed complex data into accessible insights:
Python & Tableau Dashboards
# Python visualization example
import pandas as pd
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import seaborn as sns
# Market share visualization
market_data = pd.read_csv('market_analysis.csv')
plt.figure(figsize=(12, 6))
sns.barplot(x='brand', y='market_share',
data=market_data.sort_values('market_share',
ascending=False))
plt.title('Bottled Water Market Share by Brand')
plt.xticks(rotation=45)
plt.tight_layout()
plt.savefig('market_share.png', dpi=300)
Created comprehensive dashboards including:
- Interactive maps showing factory locations and distribution networks
- Market share breakdowns by brand and region
- Pricing trend visualizations across different market segments
- Regulatory compliance scorecards for different facilities
- Supply-demand gap analysis by geographic area
Key Findings
Market Structure Insights
- High Fragmentation: Market dominated by 3-4 large players (65% market share) with 20+ smaller regional brands
- Geographic Concentration: 70% of production facilities located in Kathmandu Valley despite growing demand in other regions
- Informal Market Presence: Estimated 15-20% of market consists of unregistered or non-compliant products
- Price Variations: 300% price differential between economy brands and premium brands, not fully explained by quality differences
Regulatory Gaps Identified
- Inconsistent Enforcement: Only 40% of visited factories had up-to-date quality certifications despite legal requirements
- Testing Infrastructure: Limited laboratory capacity for regular water quality testing
- Labeling Issues: 30% of products lacked complete ingredient/source information
- License Verification: Difficulty for consumers to verify product authenticity
- Cross-District Oversight: Gaps in regulatory coordination across jurisdictions
Market Inefficiencies
- Distribution Bottlenecks: Rural areas face 2-3x higher prices due to distribution constraints
- Information Asymmetry: Consumers lack reliable information to assess product quality
- Seasonal Demand Spikes: Production capacity underutilized 6 months/year, shortages during peak season
- Capital Constraints: Small producers unable to invest in modern equipment and quality systems
Recommendations Developed
For Policymakers
- Strengthen Enforcement: Increase inspection frequency and penalties for non-compliance
- Expand Testing Infrastructure: Establish regional water quality testing laboratories
- Consumer Protection: Implement QR code system for product verification and traceability
- Regional Development: Incentivize production facility development outside Kathmandu
For Market Participants
- Quality Differentiation: Invest in certification and transparent quality communication
- Distribution Expansion: Develop partnerships for rural market penetration
- Collective Action: Form industry associations for standards development and self-regulation
- Technology Adoption: Upgrade production technology to improve efficiency and quality
For UNICEF/Development Partners
- Capacity Building: Support training programs for small producers on quality management
- Infrastructure Investment: Co-invest in testing laboratories and certification systems
- Public Awareness: Consumer education campaigns on water quality and safety
- Policy Advocacy: Support regulatory reform for improved market oversight
